Project readOn Press Release Posted by: John March 31st, 2007 08:01 AM
Here's a copy of a press release that was recently published about Project readOn!

March 27, 2007 11:00 AM Eastern Daylight Time
Any Video on the Net You Want with Captions? No Problem
Access for All is Not Just a Slogan It’s a Reality
AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Project readOn solves the
problem of online video captioning. They are not just another company
with captioning software handing the tools to the community to ‘do
it themselves’. They are captioning online
video content using a revolutionary concept of universally applicable
standalone e-captions in a flash based browser window that never ‘touch’
the content itself. This method relieves all of the traditional issues
of hosting, mastering, and player requirements. It’s
simple and ingenious. They are a project of Rhino
Moon Captioning Ltd., and were announced March 16th,
2007.
Based in Austin, Texas with a satellite office in Los Angeles, Rhino
Moon Captioning started Project readOn [www.projectreadon.com ]
9 months ago. First they developed and filed a patent for their “Project
readOn” player, described earlier. Next they
built a user driven website where people can join for free, search their
database of captioned content, suggest content on the net that they
would like to see with captions, receive notification of when it is
done, and then watch it. People are responding:
Shane Feldman of DeafDC.com says:
“If you’re
like me, your frustration grew exponentially over the last several years
as you fruitlessly searched for online videos that were captioned. Not
many companies or individuals were willing to step up to the plate and
provide a widely needed service – but now
that we have one with Project readOn, we all need to show our unified
support for this marvelous initiative.”
Carl Wurtz of Hyperoptix Design says:
“I’m a
developer and I’ve never seen the application
of a simpler and more ingenious use of internet technology to solve a
very real problem for a large community of people.”
Live since March 16th, 2007, Project readOn has
already garnered the interest of major internet video hosting companies,
investors, and the deaf and hard of hearing community. They have
developed a widget and are talking to several major video hosting
companies, online TV networks, and content aggregators for ways to host
the widget.
Project readOn is a company to watch. They have taken a very real
problem for the most emerging aspect of online technology and solved it,
today.

CNN Video about Movie Captioning Posted by: John March 29th, 2007 10:44 PM
This video posted on CNN has generated a lot of interest. It contains a lot of very interesting information about captioning, theater captioning technology, commentary, and more. However, when posted on the website, CNN did not caption the video itself!
It was requested that we provide some captions and a transcript, so we did, and now it is posted here for everyone to enjoy. As always, click the image to launch the video and the caption player. You can also find some more information about this clip at the NAD Blog.
We'd love to hear your thoughts about this issue, feel free to comment below!

More new videos! Posted by: Jack March 26th, 2007 09:32 PM
Hey everyone,
Several new videos up today that we hope you will all check out. We are trying to caption a little bit of everything rather than focus entirely on one genre so if you don't see yours up there yet please keep checking back!

Lots of new faces! Posted by: Mateo March 24th, 2007 05:28 PM
Thanks so much to everyone using our site lately and submitting requests. While we certainly appreciate your enthusiasm we just wanted to let you know that due to an unusually high number of requests it will take us longer than usual to complete them. But we are working on them!
As of today we are only able to caption a limited number of videos per day. As more funding becomes available, either through your individual donations on our sponsor page and outside sources such as grants and advertising, we will be able to increase the number of videos we can caption each day.
Thanks again for your interest in Project readOn!

About the Project - First Installment Posted by: John March 23rd, 2007 08:10 AM
Hi, I'm John Erskine, one of three founders of Project readOn. I want to start a short series of posts to give some more information about the background of Project readOn. We've gotten a ton of questions about 'who we are' and 'what we are trying to do', so I thought this would be a good place to answer some of those questions.
Matt, Jack, and I run a captioning company called Rhino Moon. We've worked together for a long time and have been doing captions for several years. Before that we were in the online entertainment world in a couple of different forms, mainly MMORPG video games. Over the last couple of years we have noticed that there are very few captions or subtitles for online content and in our dealings with the entertainment industry realize that many content providers are not focused on that issue very much, if at all. In addition to that there are some non-trivial technical issues having to do with media player types, formats, versions, browsers, operating systems, etc. that prevent a 'simple solution' to this issue.
So, we had an idea to try something very different from the 'traditional' captioning model we work with in the entertainment industry. In that model, the content creator sends us a dub of the media and we go through a number of processing and mastering steps to create a finished product with embedded captions. On the Internet, there is no need for that because the media is readily available. So, we made a new streaming captioning/subtitling technology to deliver open captions via a browser. What you see now is really a very simple version of what we would like to ultimately achieve with the project, but it works and we think it is pretty cool (we hope users will think so too, and we're trying to figure that out right now).
We'd love for you to create an account and request some media that you would like to see captioned! We'll put it in the queue and post it on the site for everyone to enjoy! Access for all!
I'll come back with more info in a future installment on 'About the Project', in the meantime, please participate in the comments section and let us know what you think!

New posts and welcome! Posted by: Jack March 22nd, 2007 09:51 PM
Hey everyone!
I just want to personally welcome everyone to our site and I hope it meets and/or exceeds all of your needs and wants.
We have received quite a few requests since our launch a few days ago and we're working hard to get them all done as quickly as possible. If you don't see your request up on the main page please check the Media page or do a search. The requests are coming in so quickly that even fairly new requests are being knocked off the main page. If yours hasn't been completed yet keep checking back often and it'll be up there soon.
Thanks again for all of your support!

Our Mission Posted by: Mateo March 19th, 2007 08:12 AM
Our mission is to be at the forefront of the online video revolution by empowering people in the deaf and hard of hearing, and foreign language communities. Gain access to the content that YOU want to enjoy whenever and wherever YOU want.
We have three key tenets to our mission. One, Empowerment: We believe that the captioning model today is essentially broken because the consumers of the product have no meaningful involvement in the process. We believe the community should choose what they want captioned, not the other way around. Today people who want captions have to lobby and petition to get captions on the content that they want to enjoy. With Project readOn that model is completely reversed. Now you have the power to not only advocate but to decide exactly what you want captioned and get it! Two, Community: We are real people doing real work watching, transcribing, and captioning online video content at the highest quality levels. We don't require users to pay to view our caption player. Our website is designed for you to interact, think about, request, discuss and most importantly view the content you want to see captioned. We rely on your generous support in the form of sponsorships to be able to pay for our ability to do this. It's that simple. Three, Technology: We have developed a caption player that takes full advantage of browser technology and sits completely outside of the content itself instead of the traditional format of laying captions over content. This allows us to be completely universal in our application of captions. We can caption anything anywhere on the internet without touching it and without encoding or player issues. This powerful solution also protects the creative integrity of the content itself, never blocking out the viewable space.
Please let us know about your experience here and give us the feedback we need in order to provide you with the content that most interests you. At this point we are wide open. This service is for you and will be driven by your needs. Tell us what interests you and we will head that direction.

Welcome to the Project readOn Community Posted by: Mateo March 12th, 2007 08:51 AM
I am one of the founders of Project readOn and I wanted to thank you for visiting our site.
Our mission is to make online video content accessible to all. Project readOn is available for everyone to use and our goal is to never charge anyone to use our player. Please understand however that we do have real people providing these top quality captions, so we have real costs that need to be taken care of. We view ourselves as something along the lines of a public radio station: your contributions allow us to do business and every single dollar we get from your sponsorships goes directly to captioning content. So after you get familiar with our player and if you enjoy our service become a sponsor and help us become your total online captioning service. For real, you are in the driver's seat here: You want it captioned? Ask for it. Support us. This is captioning empowerment like never before. Let's make it happen!
