Tom and Jerry - His Mouse Friday - Uncensored
Posted by: John  January 22nd, 2008 06:33 PM

Here is a famous Tom and Jerry cartoon which has been requested a number of times. This video is somewhat controversial, as it has been censored from television and rarely seen. To learn more about this cartoon, check out the information here: (thanks to Wikipedia for the links)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/His_Mouse_Friday
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_and_Jerry_(MGM)

Here is a direct quote from Wikipedia describing this censorship:

'Like a number of other animated cartoons in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, Tom and Jerry was not considered politically correct in later years. Some cartoons featured either Tom or Jerry in blackface following an explosion, which are subsequently cut when shown on television today, although The Yankee Doodle Mouse blackface gag is still shown in other countries. The black maid, Mammy Two Shoes is often considered racist because she is depicted as a poor black woman who has a rodent problem. Other ethnic stereotypes are also omitted, particularly the black maid, Mammy Two-Shoes, whose voice was redubbed by Turner in the mid-1990s in hopes of making the character sound less stereotypical. One cartoon in particular, His Mouse Friday, is often banned from television due to the cannibals being seen as racist stereotypes. If shown, the cannibals' dialogue is edited out, although their mouths can be seen moving.'

Project readOn Political Partners
Posted by: John  January 10th, 2008 11:21 PM

We get a lot of questions about Project readOn political partners, and why we have the partners that we do (or don't). So I wanted to share a little bit about our process, and hopefully motivate you to contact more political candidates that should provide their online videos with captions!

Due to the sensitive nature of political content, we must sign a simple, but 'formal' agreement with each candidate whose videos we caption. We offer a simple proposal to every political candidate: we'll caption 100 minutes of content totally free, then after 100 minutes there is a modest fee to cover our costs. This means that every candidate can take advantage of our service with as little barrier as possible. We believe there's no reason not to caption at least 100 minutes with Project readOn! We do not endorse any candidate, or any philosophy, we would love to include everyone in our mission!

We have contacted every candidate, but not every candidate has elected to participate in our service. If someone chooses not to participate in our service, then we can't caption their content due to the sensitive nature of politics. We'd like to thank those that have decided to take advantage of our service and provide 'Access for All!' for their content, and many candidates should be applauded for continuing the commitment beyond the 100 free minutes. We are especially excited about the commitment that Tom Harkin has made to caption all of his online content, and hope that others will follow his example for the benefit of everyone!

So, we'd love it if you reached out to the various political candidates that you care about, encourage them to use our service and take advantage of the opportunity that we provide! Here are some resources you might find useful in searching for the various candidates in the Presidential, Senate, and House races for 2008: (thanks to Wikipedia for all of these links...)

General information about the 2008 Presidential Election
Information about the 2008 Democratic Presidential Election
Information about the 2008 Republican Presidential Election
General information about the 2008 Senate Elections
General information about the 2008 House of Representatives Elections
Information about the 2008 Presidential Primary system

It is Primary season, which is an incredibly important part of the overall process. Now is an important time to get involved! We enourage you to educate yourself about the election process and the candidates. Regardless of who you like or don't like, we encourage you to participate, think, discuss, debate, educate, and most importantly we encourage you to get out and vote!!
