Translation help for Gratefulness.org
Posted by: John  December 15th, 2007 02:29 PM

We're happy to announce that Gratefulness.org, A Network for Grateful Living (ANG*L), has become a Project readOn Partner and has a partner page at www.projectreadon.com/gratefulness.

Be sure to check out their wonderful website and check their Project readOn partner page for captioned videos.

We have decided to undertake a fun project to spread the message of Gratefulness by translating the video 'A Good Day, with Brother David Steindl-Rast' into as many languages as possible. Project readOn is capable of hiring translators to do this work, but instead we would like to ask community members to volunteer to translate the text of the video into languages that they may speak. We will then make the video available in that language for all to enjoy.

If you are able and willing to translate for the wonderful project, please contact us at support@projectreadon.com and we'll give you more information about the needs of the project!

Petition for Captions on Online Videos
Posted by: John  December 10th, 2007 07:38 AM

We got this message from Rosaline Crawford of the National Association of the Deaf and thought we would pass it along to you:

There is a new online petition about Captions on Online/Downloadable Videos at http://www.petitiononline.com/CC4web/petition.html.

The petition is directed at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), but it could also be used to advocate directly with online video program providers, manufacturers, etc.

The petition may also be used by the Coalition of Organizations for Accessible Technology (COAT) to demonstrate further the need and desire for captions on online and downloadable videos.

Please consider signing and supporting this online petition. You are also welcome to leave additional comments and feedback in support of captions in this context.

Please consider sharing this information with your families, friends, and members of your organization to circulate the petition further.

Thank you.

Rosaline

Senator Harkin Press Release on Project readOn
Posted by: Mateo  December 4th, 2007 11:15 PM

We are extremely proud to announce that Senator Harkin issued a press release today in strong support of his partnership with Project readOn:

TOMHARKIN.COM PARTNERS WITH PROJECTREADON.COM TO PROVIDE CLOSED CAPTIONING OF WEB VIDEO TO DISABLED Harkin campaign becomes the first Senate campaign to use innovative service to provide disabled persons with access to online video.

Des Moines, IA – Senator Tom Harkin's campaign website launched a new service at www.tomharkin.com/closed-captioned-video to make the campaign's online video accessible to those with hearing disabilities through an innovative closed-captioning program provided by www.ProjectReadON.com.

A longtime champion for persons with disabilities, Senator Harkin authored the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990 to protect the civil rights of more than 54 million Americans with physical and mental disabilities.

“The Internet has been instrumental in bringing our democracy closer to the people and it is our duty as Americans to ensure that that those with disabilities can have full use of the technology,” said Senator Harkin. “The recent CNN/YouTube debates illustrated the effectiveness of online video and I am proud to be partnering with Project readON to provide technology that helps to give Americans with disabilities an equal opportunity to engage in our democracy.”

Project readON is the web's leading and most innovative closed-captioning service that works toward a single goal of making online media content available to all by giving users the power to decide exactly what videos they want captioned and by giving webmasters an innovative and easy to use caption player to install on their websites.

“When Senator Harkin’s office contacted us I can honestly say that this was perhaps the highest point in our professional life of working in the closed captioning industry. To be sought out by the person that wrote the very act that spawned our industry is, to say the least, an honor. We look forward to contributing to online video captioning becoming the norm across the web, and it’s a great personal pleasure to be a part of Senator Harkin’s online video message as he takes the lead in that effort!” -- Mateo Gutierrez, co-founder of Project readON.

The campaign will continue to update and add additional closed-captioned videos to this innovative service. For more information regarding Project readON's innovative services and technology please visit, www.projectreadon.com or contact Mateo Gutierrez at mateo.gutierrez@projectreadon.com

Way to go, Mateo! :) I, too, look forward to the day it becoming the norm across the web and expanding the organization with more people willing to help out! I am looking for guidelines on how you determine whether to caption a video - for instance, do you need to ask permission from a youtube user, copyright issues, and so forth. That way, I'd know better not to submit certain videos, other than at this current time you are looking for the "popularity" viewing of a video. For instan

Posted by: John  December 9th, 2007 01:47 PM
Hi IamMine, Feel free to submit anything you like, on our end we look for videos that seem like they would be appealing to the PRO audience, and are reasonable to caption. If there are potential copyright issues, we will take that into account. But it doesn't mean you shouldn't submit them, because we use the 'requests' as reasoning to approach copyright holders for permission to caption their material.

New synchronized player
Posted by: John  December 3rd, 2007 08:20 PM

I hope by now that everyone has had a chance to check out the new 'synchronized' and 'embedded' Project readOn player and the redesigned website. If you read the feed, but haven't visited the new site, be sure to do so! We'd love to have your feedback.

We've been very busy on the development side for some time, and this is the output. We hope you like it, and we believe it is much more user friendly! One feature to notice is the new 'partner page' functionality. On the home page, each 'partner' has a button which will take you to their specific 'partner pages' where all of their videos are hilighted and located together. This should make it even easier to find content from specific partner sites.

We've got a lot of videos 'in the hopper' from requests that we will be captioning, and we will be going back through a lot of the existing videos to retouch them for more accuracy in the new player. By the way, if you notice any problems with any of the captions, please send us an email and let us know.

Finally, we also have a number of new 'partners' and 'partner pages' coming online in the next month or two, so look forward to more partner content to come!
Cheers! - John
